Teaching Students to Collaborate with Novell Vibe

In August of this year, Pam David, network administrator for Roselle School District 12 near Chicago, engaged our services through our vibe:Advantage offering in order to help them get started with Novell Vibe. Now, almost three months later, I asked Pam to send us some news on how they were doing.

Here is her status updates in her own words:

Challenge

District 12 prides itself on staying on top of technology in order to prepare our students to be life-long learners and positive contributors in a global society. With our movement forward with technology came frustrations. One big frustration was students working on projects collaboratively. It was difficult when the district did not have a resource to use.

Another lapse in district technology was the ability to teach electronic communication to students in a safe and secure environment. The district did not feel comfortable using internet sites where the teacher did not have total control.

While the district has used electronic forms in the past, it was cumbersome and they were not able to be submitted over the internet. There were many issues and lost information.

While the district prides itself on communication, grade level teams struggled with email communication. The Reply All function was not always used, leaving some team members in the dark.

Vibe Solution

With Vibe, the district has addressed a lot of our challenges. Vibe has provided a way for students to collaborate on projects and always go back to a previous version. It has provided a safe and secure environment in order to teach electronic communication skills. It has also given teachers a way to communicate and be able to see past discussions. Forms have been created in Vibe and are working well.

Results

We purchased Vibe 2 years ago, but were slow in getting it up and running. This past fall we hired Adaris to get Vibe fully functional. Adaris created a landing page, helped us set up 2 forms, and trained teachers. It was well worth the investment. We were able to start using Vibe when the teachers arrived for the new school year.

This past fall, we used Vibe for a second grade bat project. Second graders were able to log into Vibe and use the Word add-in to seamlessly save their projects. It was easy for the teachers to go to one place and grade the projects. Middle school students have been introduced to Vibe by starting a blog.

We are also using Vibe as a place of information. We have a page of recipes and a place where staff members can post family and friends’ businesses. Along with the fun items we have posted tech tidbits and district information.

Vibe has opened our District to a new host of technology wonders.

It sure is great to hear such great news from customers! To find out how Novell Vibe could be useful in your organization, please contact us. You can also download our :Advantage flyers to find out how to get started quickly and efficiently with Vibe.
