Storage Manager addresses the “Govern” aspect of file management. Few organizations ever really think about automated, policy-based file management; there is simply too much reliance on manual work and human intervention.

Take user home directories, for example. When creating users, pretty much any OS worth its salt will allow you to automatically create their home directories. But that’s it. What happens when those users leave the organization?

Nothing. In most cases, the user directories are abandoned, with all of the data they contain. This has the potential to introduce serious compliance risks, data loss and bloated, stale storage space. With Storage Manager, a simple user directory policy could automatically move that data to secondary storage, with specific rights given to a manager to verify if any of the data is still valuable. After a specified amount of time, the directory could even be automatically deleted.
