INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
Records and Information Management (RIM) isn’t just about managing paper documents; it also means managing and ensuring compliance around the mountain of digital data that organizations produce. I.T. may be responsible for making sure the data is accessible, secured, backed up, etc; but ultimately, when issues arise around audits, retention & compliance, then it’s the RIM people that must provide the answers.
Despite the collaboration and document management systems put in place by many enterprise customers, most organizations have massive amounts of files still residing in network shares. Users understand, know and love iles and directories – it’s what they’re familiar with.
But what’s out there? Who owns what? Who has access to it? Who has rights to it? How do we insure that corporate policies around rights are enforced and respected? Can we automate a nomenclature for our directory structures, like group or project folders?
And what about storing sensitive corporate documents in consumer cloud services, like Dropbox or Box? Not only do we not have any assurance that these aren’t being leaked, but all of these reside in the US, thereby falling under the Patriot Act – not always recommended for compliance-heavy industries.
