Novell Vibe 3.2 Makes Working with Files Easier

Novell Vibe 3.2 is right around the corner – slated for general availability in mid-November 2011. Once again, the developers at Novell have been hard at work on this new release:

  • Versioning Management – turn on/off, set max/minor versions, auto-delete old versions, multi-delete versions
  • Vibe Connector – sync calendars and tasks from Vibe to GroupWise
  • File Management – file size quota
  • Workflow improvements – need workflow transitions based on field value, add the ability for a workflow to modify the value of an entry field
  • Survey improvements – add ability to change order of survey questions
  • “Change To” support – change entry from one type of entry to another
  • Landing Page improvements – fixed and percentage widths of table columns, easy removal of menu bar, define background image or color
  • Task improvements – easy date and task order changes in folder view, “Order” as secondary sort, wrap long task names
  • Mobile apps – iPhone/Android apps
  • Performance improvements – various
  • UX improvements – improve look-and-feel of emails

However, we here at Adaris think that one of the coolest features coming down the pipe is a plugin for MS Office 2007 & 2010, which will make in-place file editing soooo much easier! This plugin should be available early in 2012, hopefully around January. We’ll keep you posted!

But why talk about, when we can show you!

Check it out!

Good job, Jacques! Great, short, clear demo. What do you use for video capture? I like the transparent bar that pops up at the bottom to show what you’re typing.

Nice demo. The new Office plugin looks great.

One thing you mentioned in the demo was that it is hard to add a new file to a Vibe folder. You stated that you had to go to Word (or whatever editor) and create a file first, then save it locally, then upload it to Vibe. But did you know that you can configure your Vibe server to allow you to just create a new Word file (or whatever) right from the Vibe UI without going through the steps of creating it locally first? When you add the configuration variable described below, there will be an option on the “New File Entry” button to add a new empty file of the selected type (e.g., a new .docx file).

To configure this facility, add the following line to ssf-ext.properties:
    file.createFileTypes=.docx,.ods,.odt,.xlsx

This facility has been available since Vibe 3.1 (albeit it is described as “latent”, but it does work)

  3. Hello,
it’s much easier to work with files if you need no repeated authentication or credentials caching. We have a SSO solution, which works not only for the interactive portal but also for all WebDAV interfaces. This is available for both Vibe and Filr. It also works with Novell client and Microsoft’s domain authentication = user authenticates once, to the network, in the morning, and that’s it.
